AVAE seeks to help artists be more creative. 

We believe that with the right tools, artists can tell better stories and realize the full extent of their imaginations. While technology is a powerful tool to tell these stories, it must be simple and easy to use. It must help us, not hinder us. 

That’s why we built Canvas -- a tool that helps sound designers create dynamic experiences for live performance. We hope it will bridge the chasm between arts and technology and help us all be more creative.

Christopher Baine

Avae is led by Christopher Baine, a DC-based sound designer and composer with more than 15 years’ experience in professional theater. Christopher is the recipient of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts' inaugural Artpreneur of the Year Award, and has four Helen Hayes Awards and seven nominations. He has designed for companies around the country such as The Guthrie Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Marin Theatre Company, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Studio Theatre, Folger Theater, HERE Arts, and the Kennedy Center. Christopher graduated from University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a BFA in Sound Design and received a Kenan Fellowship with the Kennedy Center in 2012.

Leigh-Ann leads graphics and user interface design for Avae. She brings extensive experience creating custom installation art and unique event design, and has worked with clients including Marriott International, the DC Public Library Foundation, Ditto Residential, Wanderlust Yoga Festival, and Anthropologie. She graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a BFA in Set Design and received a Kenan Fellowship with the Kennedy Center in 2012. http://www.leighannfriedel.com/




GW is a professional sound designer, composer, and software programmer who has worked in theater for more than 18 years. In addition to supporting Avae, GW works at the University of Wisconsin-Madison teaching sound, lighting, and design. He has worked with South Coast Repertory, Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts (PCPA), Utah Shakespeare Festival, Huntington Theatre Company, Olney Theatre Center, and many others. GW holds a MFA in Sound Design from Boston University and a BA in Technical Theater from the University of California-San Bernardino.




Aaron is a professional software developer and cybersecurity research engineer with experience working with companies ranging from large, multinational corporations to small startups. He graduated from Berea College with a BA in Computer and Information Science. Aaron is passionate about using technology to create new things and helping others do the same.



Ethan White

Ethan brings a unique combination of theater, sound design, and software programming experience to Avae. He is currently the Sound and Lighting Technician Student Supervisor for the Wisconsin Union and the Chair of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s student chapter of USITT. Ethan is studying Theatre and Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and spends his summers working on large-scale entertainment control software.
